State authorities investigating fatal National Guard shooting of Memphis man 07.07.2026

State authorities are investigating a fatal shooting in Memphis involving two National Guard troops. According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the guardsmen killed 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson during a foot chase around 4 a.m. on Sunday. Memphis police reported that the soldiers fired after Johnson pointed a handgun at them. This incident occurs as the Trump administration’s deployment of troops to various U.S. cities approaches its one-year mark. Currently, approximately 1,472 National Guardsmen are stationed in Memphis as part of the Memphis Safe Task Force. While city data shows a significant reduction in crime, local lawmakers and the ACLU have expressed concerns regarding the deployment and the rules of engagement used by troops who lack direct policing authority but are performing security and support roles.
