State freezes electricity price review, hurting Kenya Power funding plans 03.06.2026

Kenya has halted a planned review of electricity prices, initially set to begin July 1, which jeopardizes funding for Kenya Power and other energy sector utilities. Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi announced Kenya Power's withdrawal of its tariff application on Wednesday, citing concerns about escalating costs for consumers. This decision is anticipated to hinder efforts to secure essential funding for critical infrastructure projects, particularly the upgrade of the electricity transmission and distribution network. The proposed tariffs, intended to be in place for three years, were viewed as vital for expanding the sector's financial resources amidst already high inflation and public discontent over the cost of living.
