Steinmeier-Nachfolge: „Führen uns auf wie in einem Teppich-Basar“, kritisiert Kramp-Karrenbauer 23.02.2026

Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, chairwoman of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, has expressed deep frustration with the public discourse surrounding the upcoming German presidential election in 2027, criticizing it as resembling a "carpet bazaar" and inappropriate for the nation's highest office. Her remarks come as the second term of current President Frank-Walter Steinmeier concludes on March 18, 2027, making him ineligible for re-election. While a specific election date is pending, CDU leader Friedrich Merz plans to propose a successor after the September state elections, emphasizing the need for a representative and guiding figure. Both SPD leader Lars Klingbeil and Green Party leader Britta Haßelmann advocate for a female president, with Klingbeil also open to candidates with less party affiliation, echoing CDU Secretary-General Carsten Linnemann's openness to a non-politician, referencing former President Joachim Gauck.
