Steinmeier-Nachfolge: Merz pocht auf Koalitionsvorschlag – „Orientierung, auch in schwierigen Zeiten“ 22.02.2026

Bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz announced that he will work with the party leaders of the CSU and SPD to propose a candidate for the successor to President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, whose second term ends on March 18, 2027. Merz emphasized the need for a personality who represents the country broadly and provides orientation, especially in difficult times. SPD leader Lars Klingbeil echoed the sentiment for a joint coalition proposal and expressed a desire for a female president, a view shared by Merz, CSU leader Markus Söder, and Green Party leader Britta Haßelmann. The election is tentatively scheduled for January 30, 2027, with a decision on nominations expected after the September 20 state elections, considering the resulting majority in the Federal Convention. Both parties are open to candidates from outside traditional politics, citing Joachim Gauck as a precedent.
