Steinmeier visits Lebanon, promises further aid amid tensions 16.02.2026

Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited Beirut, Lebanon, pledging continued German support for the country's stabilization amidst ongoing regional tensions. During a joint press conference with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Steinmeier urged both Lebanon and Israel to adhere to the 2024 ceasefire agreement, emphasizing Lebanon's responsibility to disarm Hezbollah to facilitate an Israeli withdrawal. He acknowledged the difficulty of this task, referencing the 2024 conflict that resulted in over 4,000 deaths in Lebanon and 130 in Israel. Steinmeier also planned to visit the German frigate "Sachsen-Anhalt" in Beirut port, part of the UNIFIL mission, assuring that German support would continue even after UNIFIL's mandate concludes at year-end, underscoring Germany's commitment to a stable Lebanon.
