Strikes Without Resistance: Why Kyiv's Acute Missile Shortage Plays into Putin's Hands 07.07.2026

In the night leading to July 6, 2026, Russia fired 23 ballistic missiles at Kyiv, none of which were intercepted, resulting in twelve deaths. This attack highlights Ukraine's critical ammunition crisis, as the interception rate for ballistic missiles has plummeted from 40 percent in January to a mere eight percent in July. While drones and cruise missiles can still be effectively countered, the Patriot system lacks the necessary interceptor missiles. Global production is insufficient to meet demand, especially as conflicts in the Middle East place massive strain on stockpiles. Russia is strategically exploiting this bottleneck, using infrastructure attacks to weaken Kyiv's negotiating position ahead of a potential ceasefire. Ukraine is now attempting to close this protection gap through indigenous developments such as the "Koral" project or the FP-7.X.
