Strong fortress being established against marine pollution 05.07.2026

The Deputy Ministry of Shipping, in collaboration with the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), is implementing an intensive framework of actions to combat marine pollution in Cyprus. Starting from mid-July, an advanced long-range drone (150 nautical miles) with an internal combustion engine will be utilized to monitor the coastline and identify violators. This initiative, which costs €1 million and is funded by EMSA, is accompanied by increased sampling and the use of surveillance vessels by various municipalities. The goal is to protect Blue Flag sites and ensure the health of bathers, while simultaneously planning medium-term actions, such as the development of a digital platform and the improvement of wastewater management infrastructure, in order to ensure water quality and the protection of the tourism product.
