Student-athlete dies, 2 coaches hospitalized during BARMM regional games 16.04.2026

The BARMM Athletic Association Meet 2026 in Parang, Maguindanao del Norte has been marred by tragedy with the death of an 11-year-old sepak takraw athlete from Lamitan City, Basilan, on April 12, 2026, due to acute respiratory failure from aspiration. Two coaches also required hospitalization: a 47-year-old weightlifting coach whose varicose veins ruptured, and a taekwondo coach who suffered a stroke with a blood pressure reading of 240/180. In response to these incidents and the prevailing high temperatures, BARMM officials suspended all outdoor activities between 9 AM and 3 PM, limiting events to indoor sports or those requiring less physical exertion. Health Minister Dr. Kadil Sinolinding, Jr. acknowledged a learning curve regarding preparedness, particularly the need for basic life support training for all nurses, coaches, and officials.
