"Such changes usually lead to job cuts" - RÚV.is 08.06.2026

The Association of Municipalities in Northwest Iceland (SSNV) has expressed concern over the planned reduction of police districts in the country from nine to five. Einar E. Einarsson, the association's executive director, believes this will reduce services for rural areas and is another attack on public services there. He points out that public sector jobs have already decreased in Northwest Iceland, while they have increased elsewhere. The Ministry of Justice intends to submit a bill on these changes this autumn, aiming to strengthen law enforcement and increase the number of police officers, with consultation with the police to take place. Páley Borgþórsdóttir, the police chief in Northeast Iceland, however, supports the changes and considers the goal of strengthening law enforcement positive, but does not understand how it entails a reduction in police officers or the closure of police stations.
