Sudan Fears Next Bloodbath 07.07.2026

The situation in Sudan is deteriorating dramatically as experts warn of an imminent genocide in the city of Al-Obeid. While the city is currently still held by government troops, the paramilitary RSF militias are besieging the area, which is considered a strategic gateway to Darfur and Khartoum. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk and expert Roman Deckert warn of a humanitarian catastrophe reminiscent of the massacres in Al-Fashir, where thousands of civilians died following a siege. The aid organization International Rescue Committee emphasizes the difficult situation for aid workers, as escape routes and supply lines lie within combat zones. Despite urgent warnings, the international community lacks the political will to take effective action against the warring parties. In particular, the support from regional actors such as the United Arab Emirates for the RSF complicates diplomatic leverage for Western states, which do not want to jeopardize their partners in the region.
