Sudan peace: the shadow of the al-Bashir regime looms over talks 04.06.2026

A new peace initiative launched in Nairobi in May 2026 by a coalition of Sudanese civilian, political, and armed factions aims to end the ongoing civil war and restore the nation's transition to civilian rule. This roadmap, independent of the warring Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, proposes a three-track process involving humanitarian aid, an internationally monitored ceasefire, and state reform to address root causes like regional marginalization. A key element of the Nairobi initiative is the exclusion of the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces from the political process, as well as barring leaders of the former ruling National Congress Party and associated Islamist movement, who are seen as responsible for the conflict that began on April 15, 2023. This approach contrasts with other international efforts, such as the Berlin conference, which advocate for inclusive dialogue.
