Humpback whales are a common sight off South Africa's coastline from June to November, but they are typically seen in small pods. However, an extraordinary spectacle is unfolding as massive supergroups of humpback whales become increasingly common. Cape Town wildlife photographer Chris Fallow has been capturing these breathtaking gatherings up close. He recalls that towards the end of last year, whale numbers steadily increased from groups of 20 or 50 to over 100 by mid-December. At the end of the month, about 100 kilometres north of Cape Town, he and his wife Monique witnessed hundreds of whales feeding in one small area, a sight he describes as "a Manhattan skyline with huge plumes of whale breath." By photographing each unique whale tail and submitting the images to the Happywhale platform, Fallows realized he had been among 299 humpback whales, marking the largest single-location sighting ever submitted to the platform in a 24-hour period.
