Susana Rafalli: We need help with water, non-perishable food, and hygiene items #July3 03.07.2026

Susana Rafalli, a food security expert and advisor to Caritas Venezuela, highlighted on July 2 the urgent need for donations focused on the rescue phase following the double earthquake that has affected Venezuela, claiming 2,595 lives and leaving 12,400 injured so far. She emphasized the need for potable water, non-perishable food, hygiene items, coats, and mats, prioritizing life-saving supplies over other items that will be useful in later stages. Rafalli also addressed the issue of disorganized aid and "emergency tourism," urging that donations be channeled through accredited organizations. She noted that post-earthquake recovery could extend from three to five years, requiring sustained support. The complexity of the tragedy in Venezuela is exacerbated by its impact on an already weakened population—lacking savings and insurance, facing inflation, with unvaccinated children and a collapsed water system—multiplying the scale of the disaster.
