Starting March 1, 2026, French customs will remove specific tobacco products from sale, impacting cigar boxes and tobacco packets. This measure is part of the government's ongoing strategy to combat smoking through price increases, with approximately 500 tobacco references facing new, generally higher, tariffs. Despite a reported continuous decrease in smoking rates in France, with a 7% average decline between 2017 and 2024 according to the OFDT, tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable mortality, responsible for around 75,000 deaths annually, including 46,000 from cancer, as stated by the Institut national du cancer.
