In Japan, where finding a permanent storage site for highly radioactive nuclear waste is a nationwide challenge, the mayor of Genkai, Shintaro Wakiyama, has renewed his town's voluntary offer to be considered as a potential geological repository. This follows intense local opposition two years prior, which included the arson of his car, when his initial proposal sparked anger among the 6,000 residents. The national government had previously requested municipalities to come forward, leading to earlier expressions of interest from Suttsu and Kamoenai on Hokkaido. Now, an additional location within the Tokyo administrative zone has also put itself forward for consideration, reigniting the complex debate over long-term nuclear waste disposal.
