Taiwan Athletics Open canceled due to budget holdup 09.04.2026

The Taiwan Athletics Open, scheduled for June 6-7 in New Taipei City, has been canceled due to a budget holdup in the opposition-controlled legislature, which has stalled the central government's NT$3.035 trillion budget since January. This annual event, inaugurated in 1973, is a crucial platform for local athletes to compete with international talent and earn world ranking points, having been a Continental Tour Bronze-level event in 2024 and slated for an upgrade to Silver this year. Minister of Sports Lee Yang stated the ministry will utilize its sports fund to support the association, while Deputy Minister of Sports Cheng Shih-chung announced his resignation, effective immediately, to return to teaching.
