'Talk to migrants now', expert warns as protests pile pressure on government 05.07.2026

Immigration expert Dr. Gideon Chitinga is urging the South African government to establish structured dialogue platforms with both documented and undocumented immigrant communities to address the root causes of migration. This recommendation follows nationwide anti-illegal immigration protests led by over 20 civic organizations, including the March and March movement. These demonstrations, which occurred across all nine provinces, demanded the removal of undocumented foreign nationals, citing concerns over job competition and strain on public services. Despite government calls for calm, protests have escalated, leading to reports of looting and injuries. Acting Police Minister Professor Firoz Cachalia noted that R600 million has already been spent on security measures to maintain order. As organizers pledge to continue weekly Thursday marches, experts warn that the government must balance law enforcement with diplomatic relations and institutional reforms to find lasting solutions.
