Tanzania has called for stronger international cooperation to ensure artificial intelligence (AI) governance is inclusive, transparent, and equitable, warning that developing countries must not be left behind. The call was made on July 6, 2026, by Minister for Communication and Information Technology Angellah Kairuki at the Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva, addressing over 190 delegates. Kairuki outlined Tanzania's vision of AI as a strategic pillar of Vision 2050 and a key driver of its digital economy, with potential to transform agriculture, healthcare, education, financial services, and public administration. She noted the government is implementing reforms to establish a robust policy and regulatory framework, including modernizing data governance, enhancing privacy and cybersecurity, and developing national AI guidelines. Kairuki also highlighted investments in digital infrastructure like the National ICT Broadband Backbone and Digital Public Infrastructure, and reaffirmed commitment to collaboration with the ITU, AU, ATU, EAC, and SADC to promote interoperable digital ecosystems while safeguarding national sovereignty and data protection.
