Tanzania launches home UTI test kit to boost early detection and reduce unnecessary clinic visits 03.07.2026

Tanzania has launched the Checkfor UTI Test, a portable home-testing kit designed to enable individuals to conduct preliminary screening for urinary tract infections (UTIs) at home. Speaking in Dar es Salaam on July 2, 2026, community health specialist Eshton Nkala emphasized that the product aims to improve early detection and encourage prompt medical intervention. UTIs affect millions globally, with global data from the Front Public Health journal showing an estimated 404.61 million cases in 2019 and 236,790 deaths, a 2.4-fold increase over 29 years. Dr. Nkala noted that UTIs often start with minor symptoms like frequent urination, burning sensation, or abdominal pain, but delayed recognition and treatment can lead to complications. The test is not a replacement for professional medical care but serves as an early screening tool to help individuals make informed decisions about seeking treatment. Manufactured in Tanzania by Canadian Biotech, the kit is available at suppliers including JD Pharmacy, Bariki Pharmacy, and Cugra General Supplier. Dr. Nkala stressed the importance of early diagnosis in an era emphasizing preventive healthcare, urging people not to ignore symptoms.
