Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan is undertaking a three-day state visit to Russia, marking the first official trip by a Tanzanian head of state to Moscow since 1969. This historic visit occurs amidst increasing criticism from Western nations regarding violence surrounding Tanzania's October 2025 elections, which resulted in 518 reported deaths. The agenda for Hassan's visit includes discussions on economic cooperation across sectors such as energy, mining, and agriculture, potential new agreements, and meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Hassan is also scheduled to attend the St Petersburg International Economic Forum and will receive an honorary doctorate from the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia. This engagement signifies a diversification of Tanzania's international relations rather than a complete break with the West, as Russia currently holds approximately $400 million in investments across 44 projects in Tanzania.
