The leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho," was killed in an operation by the Mexican army in Jalisco state. While Mexico claims sole responsibility for the raid, U.S. officials have acknowledged providing intelligence support to locate the target. This operation marks a significant development in the fight against violent cartels. The U.S. Department of State had offered a $15 million reward for information leading to El Mencho's arrest, and he faced multiple indictments in the U.S. for drug trafficking, including the production and export of methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl. A newly formed U.S. task force, Joint Interagency Task Force-Counter Cartel, also contributed to the intelligence gathering for the operation.
