Germany's federal police have incurred significant costs totaling €140 million for border controls implemented in September 2024, according to a response from the Federal Ministry of the Interior to a parliamentary inquiry by The Left party. Between August 5 and December 31, 2025, these controls resulted in 14,129 individuals being turned away at German land borders, including 552 asylum seekers. The costs encompass overtime, allowances, operational expenses, and supplies. The Left party criticizes these measures as "cost-intensive symbolic politics" with questionable effectiveness and legality, arguing the funds are urgently needed elsewhere, particularly for integration courses which are now being restricted for certain refugee groups. Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has announced an extension of these temporary controls, viewing them as a key component of Germany's migration policy, while others, including the Greens and legal experts, question their necessity and legality given declining asylum numbers.
