Taxi industry gets RM10mil boost 04.07.2026

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim launched the National Madani Taxi Rejuvenation programme yesterday at Dataran Merdeka, injecting RM10 million to revitalize Malaysia's taxi industry. This initiative, supported by selected financial institutions, will provide taxi drivers with low-interest loans to acquire new Proton S70 sedans and obtain individual taxi permits, aiming to improve their earnings from an estimated RM2,500-RM3,000 to RM5,000-RM7,000 monthly. The program emphasizes modern hiring technology and mandatory training for drivers on new operational methods and customer service. This effort seeks to enhance the image of Malaysian taxis, safeguard drivers' livelihoods against technological changes and economic hardship, and rectify past practices where permits were allegedly granted to wealthy individuals instead of drivers.
