Technology, participation mark Ethiopia's election 04.06.2026

Observer teams from the African Union (AU) and IGAD have commended Ethiopia's 7th General Election for its neutrality, technological readiness, inclusiveness, and effective administration. Voting proceeded smoothly in 501 constituencies, though security and operational issues prevented polling in the Tigray region and parts of Oromia and Amhara. Out of over 50,000 planned polling stations, 143 did not open due to security concerns. Observers highlighted the remarkable public engagement and participation, with Speciosa Wandira-Kazibwe of IGAD noting it as unprecedented in her experience across Africa. Former Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta, leading the AU mission, also praised the conduct and the strengthening of electoral processes. Final results are anticipated within one to two weeks.
