Teen convicted of manslaughter after cigarette butt DNA matched to his inhaler 12h ago

A 19-year-old, Ali Abdul Basit, has been convicted of manslaughter for his role in the fatal stabbing of Michael Patrick Afonso Peixoto, 27, in Thornton Heath, south London, on December 19, 2023. The conviction, secured at the Old Bailey on Friday, followed a two-year investigation that included Basit fleeing to Pakistan. Police linked Basit to the crime by matching DNA from a cigarette butt found at the scene to DNA on an asthma inhaler discovered at his residence. Mr. Peixoto was attacked by a group in a white BMW after arriving with a friend, sustaining multiple stab wounds. Three other men were convicted in December 2024 for their involvement in the attack, with one receiving a life sentence for murder. Basit was arrested upon his return to the UK in May of the previous year.
