Teenager arrested on suspicion of arson after fire rips through historic mill 14h ago

An 18-year-old man from Leek has been arrested on suspicion of arson following a significant fire that engulfed The Big Mill, a Grade II-listed building on Mill Street in Staffordshire. Police were alerted to the blaze at 9:35 pm on Friday, and while no injuries were reported, the derelict six-storey mill, dating back to 1860 and significant to the local silk industry, was extensively damaged. Drone footage revealed the building was engulfed in flames, with its roof gone and a wall section missing. Fire crews worked to contain the fire, which remained unextinguished by Saturday midday due to safety concerns about entering the structure. Road closures were implemented, and nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution.
