Telstra investigating outage affecting thousands of customers 07.07.2026

On Wednesday, July 8, 2026, Telstra, Australia's largest mobile network provider, experienced a widespread outage affecting thousands of customers across all mainland capital cities. The disruption, which began around 5:00 am AEST, prevented users from making calls or utilizing mobile data, with some devices entering SOS-only mode. While Telstra described the issue as affecting "some" services, Downdetector reported over 7,000 complaints from major hubs like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. The outage also impacted mobile virtual network operators such as Boost Mobile and Belong, as well as payment processor Tyro, which noted difficulties with 4G-based eftpos transactions. Telstra has confirmed it is investigating the cause but has not yet provided an estimated time for restoration. This incident follows a previous $3 million fine the company received in 2024 regarding a past outage affecting emergency services.
