Tesla driver charged with manslaughter after crash into Texas home 04.07.2026

Michael Butler, 44, faces manslaughter charges following a fatal June 19 crash in Katy, Texas, where his Tesla Model 3 allegedly in self-driving mode veered off the road and into a residence, killing 76-year-old Martha Avila. Authorities stated Butler reported the automated driving assistance system was engaged when the vehicle, traveling at high speed, breached the home. Avila was airlifted but later died from her injuries. Butler, who showed no signs of intoxication and cooperated with investigators, was arrested on July 1 with his bond set at $150,000. The incident is under joint investigation by local authorities and federal agencies, while Avila's family has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against Butler and Tesla, alleging negligence and design defects in the vehicle's driver-assistance systems, claims Tesla disputes, with founder Elon Musk and AI lead Ashok Elluswamy suggesting manual override and excessive acceleration by the driver.
