The century old water main no-one knew existed, until it burst 03.07.2026

A century-old, unmapped water main dating back to approximately 1925 was discovered in Wellington after a series of persistent leaks and significant resident effort to locate the source. Initially, residents were told leaks were their private responsibility, but investigative work using historical Google Street View images and involving a city councillor revealed the buried cast iron pipe, which had been absent from city maps since a reservoir’s removal in 1967. Wellington Water (now Tiaki Wai) planned temporary fixes and new connections for affected properties before decommissioning the old main. However, further complications arose when a secondary break caused a geyser, delaying repairs and leaving one neighboring property owner unaware of the ongoing work. The discovery highlights issues with infrastructure management and public communication, alongside a significant rise in utilities disputes nationwide.
