Approximately fifty activists from the Aufstände der Allmende collective attempted to set up a protest camp in Benken (ZH) to denounce the environmental impact of the future Beringen data center, projected by the American company Stack Infrastructure. As the Beringen authorities refused authorization, the camp was dismantled by law enforcement, which activists described as an "abuse of state power." These activists oppose the development of infrastructure related to artificial intelligence, which they deem energy-intensive and water-intensive, and believe that AI is an "accelerator of the climate crisis." The data center could consume up to 75% of the electricity in the Canton of Schaffhausen, and its water usage would correspond to that of 344 households. Stack Infrastructure emphasizes that the center will host various digital services and plans to repurpose waste heat for a heating network, although managing this heat in the summer remains a challenge.
