The day with the fewest homicides in 10 years in Mexico occurred during the 2026 World Cup: the football truce 07.07.2026

During the FIFA World Cup in Mexico, the country experienced a notable decrease in lethal violence rates, marking a respite from persistent national criminality. Between the tournament's opening on June 11 and the conclusion of the matches on Mexican soil on July 5, a total of 1,007 intentional homicides were recorded. This represents an average of 40 murders per day, a figure that constitutes the lowest average of the entire year of 2026. Comparing this period to the beginning of the year, where the average rose to 47.3 homicides per day, a significant reduction in violence is evident. This phenomenon, described as a truce driven by the media and sporting attention surrounding the event, allowed Mexico to record its day with the lowest homicide level in more than a decade.
