September 2026 promises a diverse array of astronomical events for stargazers, following an active August. The month begins on September 1 and 2 with Venus appearing near the star Spica in the constellation Virgo, easily visible to the naked eye and separated by about 1.5 degrees. On September 3, the waning moon will pass close to the Pleiades star cluster, creating a "diamond studded" effect visible with the naked eye or binoculars. A more modest meteor shower, the Epsilon Perseids, will peak on September 9 and 10, producing up to eight meteors per hour under ideally dark skies just before the new moon.
