The future of mosquitoes in Iceland is uncertain but will be determined in the coming weeks 08.06.2026

Foreign mosquito species, Culiseta annulata and Culex pipiens f. molestus, have recently been detected in Iceland at three locations: Mógilsá in Kollafjörður, Kjós, and in a stable in Ölfus. Culiseta annulata survives the winter as an adult mosquito and lays eggs in the spring, with its life cycle taking up to four weeks. Culex pipiens f. molestus, also known as the "underground train mosquito" due to its prevalence in London's underground railway system, was found in larger numbers in Ölfus, where experiments are underway to eradicate it using silicone-based substances. Both species are believed to be capable of surviving in Iceland, but their future and spread will be determined in the coming weeks as it becomes clear whether a new generation will emerge.
