The Government uses EU funds to accelerate the naturalization of the 'great-grandchildren of the exile' 05.07.2026

The Government of Spain has confirmed that it is using Next Generation EU funds to finance the digital transformation of its consular network, thereby facilitating the management of the Democratic Memory Law. According to a response in the Senate, these funds finance appointment and document management infrastructures to handle the increase in nationality applications from descendants of emigrants. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlights that digitalization aims to improve efficiency and reduce processing times across more than 170 consular offices. As of April 30, 2,622,450 applications have been registered, with 557,709 approved. While the Executive defends the measure, the People's Party criticizes the management, calling it "electoral engineering" to increase the overseas electorate following the expansion of benefits that allows for the naturalization of descendants of emigrants for any reason.
