The legacy of June 16: Seth Mazibuko Foundation prepares for a significant anniversary 03.06.2026

The Seth Mazibuko Foundation (SMF), formally established in 2024, is preparing to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the June 16, 1976, Soweto uprising. The foundation, dedicated to preserving the legacy of the student protests against the imposition of Afrikaans and subsequent police brutality, launched its commemorative events at the Hector Pieterson Memorial in Soweto. Foundation patron Seth Mazibuko, a young leader during the 1976 protests, acknowledged the dedication of his volunteer team and has entrusted the foundation's work to a new generation, with campaign manager Tebogo Suping at the forefront. This year's initiatives aim to foster social change for South African youth, featuring intergenerational dialogues culminating in a national Youth Manifesto, the collection of 50 oral histories of women and lesser-known activists, and partnerships with heritage sites. Despite funding challenges, the SMF employs a broad coalition funding model, drawing support from various organizations and public participation, and is collaborating with the Tsietsi Mashinini Foundation for the #1976@50 campaign.
