The Ministry of Defense and the General Staff of the National Guard are attempting to strengthen the National Guard through strategic changes to the institution of Contracted Soldiers (ΣΥΟΠ), aiming to address personnel shortages. Following the increase of Contracted Non-Commissioned Officer (ΣΥΠ) positions from 250 to 400, over 300 individuals have already expressed interest in ΣΥΟΠ positions, with a possible extension of the application deadline. Simultaneously, the enlistment of the 2026 EΣΣΟ class is underway, which will include approximately 4,000 new soldiers, with Nicosia recording the highest participation rate (40%). The new recruits will receive high-quality equipment, while there is strong interest in special forces, such as the Paratroopers (ΛΟΚ). Minister of Defense Vasilis Palmas emphasized the importance of serving the homeland for the new soldiers.
