The Santa Palomba waste-to-energy plant will be built on a 6th-century BC sanctuary 14.07.2026

The Santa Palomba waste-to-energy plant project, driven by Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri to resolve the capital's waste crisis, is clashing with an unexpected archaeological discovery. The Union of Committees Against the Incinerator has reported that excavations are revealing remains of great historical value, including an archaic sanctuary dating back to the 6th-5th century BC, already known as the "IBM-Semea archaic sanctuary." According to the Committee, the structures found include a paved road covering 550 square meters, an oval basin, and an archaeological site estimated at approximately 2,500 square meters, which is still to be investigated.
