The Slovenian Sea: Small, Precious, and Under Pressure 05.07.2026

The Slovenian sea faces a complex duality: while the waters are microbiologically excellent, the ecosystem is chemically burdened and under significant pressure. Due to its shallowness and specific geomorphology, the Gulf of Trieste is extremely vulnerable to climate change, which causes water warming and a decrease in pH levels. A particular challenge is the high concentration of mercury brought into the gulf by the Soča River, as well as the presence of non-native species that outcompete indigenous organisms. In addition to ecological risks, such as the disappearance of large sea bream due to parasites, the sea is also burdened by human factors: underwater noise, plastic, and traffic in the Port of Koper. Various experts in the debate address key questions regarding food security, sustainable fisheries, and balancing economic interests with the protection of natural heritage in this small but precious marine space.
