A new report by the Malta Dyslexia Association (MDA), compiled with insights from 26 local dyslexia specialists, concludes that Malta's education system is failing students with dyslexia due to outdated teaching methods and excessive testing. Experts highlight that traditional practices, such as individual reading aloud and rapid-fire questioning, cause emotional distress, while School-Based Assessments (SBAs) have become a source of constant pressure. The report criticizes the "failure-first" approach for university entry concessions, advocating for automatic concessions based on documented learning profiles. It also calls for increased investment in specialized teacher training, the adoption of structured literacy, and the establishment of literacy specialists in schools to better support dyslexic learners and help them thrive.
