Theft of normandy scottish piper statue sparks sadness ahead of d day commemorations 02.06.2026

A 2.2-meter bronze statue of a Scottish piper, weighing approximately 600 kilograms and honoring the 51st Highland Infantry Division, has been stolen from Bréville-les-Monts in Normandy. The theft, discovered on May 29th, just before D-Day commemorations, has been called a "shameful act" by local officials. The statue, located near the D37 road, was part of a memorial dedicated to fierce fighting in the area during the Battle of Normandy. Mayor Jean-Marc Paiola has filed a police report, and authorities are investigating, suspecting the theft may be for the bronze material. Plans are underway to potentially replace the monument with a replica and use a photo panel for the upcoming June 5th commemoration.
