‘There is a need for collective action’: Middle East crisis dominates ASEAN Summit in Cebu 07.05.2026

Sri Lankan authorities have intensified their crackdown on cyberscam operations, arresting 30 Chinese and Vietnamese nationals on May 7 in Werahera, a Colombo suburb, bringing the total detentions since the weekend to 261. This latest action follows the arrest of 74 Vietnamese nationals on May 6, who were remanded until May 14. Previously, on May 3, 157 individuals were apprehended in raids on two suspected cyberscam centers. Many foreign nationals entered Sri Lanka on tourist visas and were found to be working illegally or had overstayed their visas. These arrests are part of a broader pattern, with previous detentions in March and a significant number of Chinese and Indian nationals apprehended in 2024 for alleged cybercrime activities.
