This is the salary needed to afford a typical US home in 2026 06.08.2026

A new Redfin report finds that Americans need an annual income of $109,796 to comfortably afford the median-priced U.S. home in June 2026, spending no more than 30% of income on housing costs. This figure is just 0.5% lower than the record high of $110,382 a year ago, indicating that the income needed to buy a home has changed very little over the past year. The stabilization comes as household incomes have risen alongside home prices, with the median U.S. household earning $87,599 in June, up 4% from a year ago, while median home sale prices increased 2.2%. Mortgage rates eased slightly but remained in the mid-6% range, keeping borrowing costs elevated.
