This Tasmanian has tuned 18,000 pianos. Now he’s won a place at Sydney Film Festival 05.05.2026

Martin Tucker, a 61-year-old Tasmanian who has tuned an estimated 18,000 pianos over four decades, is the subject of a new documentary titled The Piano Tuner. Directed by his partner Natalia Laska, the film chronicles Tucker’s professional life and travels across Tasmania and the Northern Territory. The documentary will hold its world premiere at the 73rd Sydney Film Festival, which begins on June 6, 2026. The festival, directed by Nashen Moodley, also features Selina Miles’ documentary Silenced as the opening film. Tucker, who maintains a steady career despite financial skepticism from banks, continues to preserve instruments through a unique "piano orphanage" initiative in Hobart, ensuring that acoustic pianos remain functional and cherished by Australian music enthusiasts across the country.
