Construction has begun on the Big Rooter Power solar farm, a $1.7 billion project in Bremond, Texas, that will transform active coal mining land into a major clean energy hub. Developed by Panamint Capital, the 1.2-gigawatt facility will be among the largest solar installations in the U.S. and the biggest ever built on a brownfield site in North America. The project will utilize land and assets from the adjacent Twin Oaks coal-fired power plant and Calvert surface coal mine, both of which will remain operational. The first phase, a 491-MW section, is expected to go online in August 2028, with the remaining 658 MW slated for completion by August 2029. The 10,000-acre site will also include 1.6 gigawatt-hours of battery storage and 20 miles of new transmission lines.
