Thousands of children at risk as RSF besieges Sudan’s el-Obeid: Charity 06.07.2026

More than 5,500 children have been newly displaced by fighting over the strategic Sudanese city of el-Obeid, and thousands more are at risk, according to Save the Children. El-Obeid, home to over half a million people and a key humanitarian lifeline for northwestern Sudan, has been besieged by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group for months. Intensifying drone attacks have killed civilians and destroyed infrastructure, causing severe fuel and water shortages. Siege-like conditions and overcrowding from internal displacement have exacerbated a seasonal cholera outbreak, with 300 confirmed cases. Save the Children expressed particular concern about the growing psychological toll on children, many of whom have witnessed violence or lost loved ones. Across Sudan, children under 18 make up about 55 percent of the country's displaced population. The UN Human Rights Council passed a motion on Monday condemning the RSF's escalating attacks on el-Obeid.
