Thousands of fish killed in park pollution mystery 03.07.2026

The Environment Agency (EA) has confirmed a large fish kill in Bromley's River Pool over the weekend, with the cause still unknown. Among the dead species are critically endangered European eels, whose juvenile populations have plummeted by up to 95% since the 1980s, along with sticklebacks, gudgeon, stone loach, and larger coarse fish like chub, roach, and dace. The affected stretch extends from Cator Park downstream to the confluence with the River Ravensbourne, covering approximately 3km. While public drinking water supplies remain unaffected, the EA advised people and animals to stay away from the area.
