Three villages recaptured by FARDC near Minembwe in South Kivu 07.07.2026

The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) have officially confirmed the recapture of three strategic villages in the Fizi territory, South Kivu. The localities of Kashamata, Wihene, and Kimete, previously occupied by the Twiraneho rebels, were liberated following intense fighting conducted in the Minembwe region. Second Lieutenant Reagan Mbuyi, spokesperson for Operation Sokola 2, specified that rebel forces were forced to retreat toward Rugezi and Bigaragara. Concurrently, the army carried out a tactical withdrawal from point zero. Vice-Governor Jean-Jacques Elakano denied rumors regarding the fall of Baraka during a security council meeting in Uvira. This situation is marked by increasing tensions, notably following reports of violations of Congolese airspace by drones originating from Rwanda.
