Three women linked to Islamic State arrested in Australia on return from Syria 07.05.2026

Three Australian women, Kawsar Abbas, 53, Zeinab Ahmed, 31, and Janai Safar, 32, have been arrested upon their return to Australia from Syria, where they had been held in detention with links to the Islamic State (IS) group. Abbas and Ahmed were arrested in Melbourne, while Safar was apprehended in Sydney. These women are part of a larger group including nine children, whose return has been a subject of significant political debate, with the Australian government stating it would not facilitate their repatriation. The children will receive psychological support and be assessed for radicalization. The arrests follow investigations into potential terrorism offenses, including entering declared areas and crimes against humanity. The government has long-standing plans to manage and monitor individuals returning from IS-controlled territories, with authorities emphasizing that any individuals who have committed crimes will face legal consequences.
