„Tod für Chamenei“: Trauernde skandieren regierungskritische Parolen im Iran 17.02.2026

In Iran, memorial services for victims of suppressed protests have escalated into demonstrations, with regierungskritische Parolen chanted in cities like Abadan and Mashhad. In Abadan, crowds reportedly shouted "Death to Khamenei" and "Long live the Shah," with videos also showing panicked flight amid sounds of gunfire, though the use of live ammunition remains unconfirmed. Mashhad saw chants of "One person was killed, thousands stand behind him." Tehran also held an official commemoration for thousands killed during the protests, attended by officials like Vice President Mohammed Reza Aref and Revolutionary Guard Commander Esmail Kaani, who vowed consequences for those supporting "rioters and terrorists." The protests, initially sparked by high living costs in late December, expanded nationwide and peaked on January 8-9. Official Iranian figures claim over 3,000 deaths, attributing them to "terrorist acts" and foreign influence, while international organizations like HRANA estimate over 7,000 fatalities, primarily protesters. Iran announced an investigation commission and called for swift trials for those involved in violence.
