Tod von "El Mencho": So ist die Lage in Mexiko 23.02.2026

Mexican soldiers killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, alias "El Mencho," the leader of the powerful Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) drug cartel, during an operation in Jalisco on Sunday. The cartel retaliated by igniting a wave of violence across 20 of Mexico's 32 federal states, with members setting fire to vehicles, banks, gas stations, and businesses, and blocking roads. The operation, which also resulted in the deaths of at least six other cartel members and seven National Guardsmen, was supported by US intelligence. Experts fear this event could escalate violence as rival gangs may seek to exploit the CJNG's perceived weakness. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum urged calm, while the US State Department warned its citizens to exercise heightened vigilance.
